Glowing Portsmouth emblem in Victoria Park

The we shine festival gave a glimpse into the lively city commercial road high street could become. The event drew hundreds to the city centre, families, students alike. Enticed into the park by fluorescent lights, opportunities to take photographs and get involved in the experience.

Left to Right: Disco lights under the railway line behind war memorial, 'fire flies', Rainbow.

A fantastic example of re-use: An empty Sainsbury's which closed down in 2020 was used as a venue for a handcrafts market. Ahead of its plans for redevelopment into an indoor skatepark.

The community spirit conjured by this space calls for a more permanent location or venue for this type of event on a semi regular basis, perhaps a multifunctional space which can host different activities and events throughout the year.

From my perspective, the city centre was transformed. I had a reason and desire to be there, in the centre of the festival. I have hope that there is a future for our high street and it is evident that the local people are eager and willing to participate in its regeneration.
